Lesson 22 – Presenting the facts

Summary

The topic of the lesson was crime. I could:

• role play giving a factual account of a crime you witnessed
• focus on crime-related vocabulary
• review past tenses used to describe past events
• practise the weak and strong form of ‘was’ and ‘were’ to sound more natural.

Types of crime

• Robbery –  the crime of stealing from somewhere or someone
• Mugging  – an act of attacking someone and stealing their money
• Theft – (the act of) dishonestly taking something that belongs to someone else and keeping it
• Shoplifting – steal from shops
• Hit and run – the driver who caused the accident drives away without helping the other people involved and without telling the police
• Smuggling – the crime of taking goods or people into or out of a country illegally
• Drug dealing – buy and sell drug
• Fraud – trick and deceive people
• Bribery – giving someone money or something else of value, often illegally, to persuade that person to do something you want
• Vandalism – intentionally damages property belonging to other people

1. I walked through/across/around the park on my way to the bank.
2. The mugging was at 1830 in the evening on Sun.
3. The police found a lot of stolen money in the boot of the car.
4. The car was driving quickly all the way along/down High Street.
5. He ran across the street to the other side.
6. They both ran round the corner.
7. The fugitive hid behind the wall and the police couldn’t see him anymore.
8. On Sun evening, the bank was robbed.

I ( background info – was/were + verb.[ing] ) and  I (main action – did)

e.g I (was doing something) and I (did other thing).

e.g I (was watching TV) and I (got the call from Ivy).

e.g I (was shopping in the local supermarket), when (I lost my purse).

e.g When my sister (was snapping on the bus), her wallet (was stolen).

To give a factual account of a crime you witnessed:

• I was walking and I saw the whole thing happen…
• I’d like to report a theft.
• I was walking down the street and someone snatched (= TAKE QUICKLY 搶) my phone right out of my hand!

e.g The cyclist just came out of nowhere and I didn’t have time to stop!
