Lesson 11 – Long-term goals

Summary
Speculating about your future hopes and dreams

The topic of this lesson is long-term goals. I had time to:

  • discuss future hopes and dreams
  • focus on phrases to talk about the future
  • practise using contractions (short-form) to sound more natural.

Hey bro, when I am doing the revision from the BC platform, I saw your appointment for the lesson next week. I think this review article will be useful for both of us.

For the foreseeable immediate future” – In the lesson – I expect you’ll have an opening discussion section as usual. After that I think you’ll also listen to two tapes about two people’s planning about their life and expectation on their local city and country. While I was listening to the tapes, I though of conversion between us at one time at a bar – one of the speaker Ms. J shares a similar targets like yours.

NOTE:

  • at one time – in the past
  • at a time – during any one period (per time)
  • at the time – at the particular point when something was thought of or done (當時)
  • at timessometimes

In terms of her education and career planning –

In the short term, she expect she’d be promoted to a high position. At that moment, she had already been the right hand woman – deputy manager in the company. and she had noticed that her boss were going to leave. “At the moment, I’m deputy manager, but my boss is planning to leave in 6 months, Ill definitely apply for her job and I expect I’ll get it.” Ms J said.

Looking ahead (= Looking at the long term), I’d really like to use my experience to open up a shop.” she added. However, it is not a easy task to – if we want to, we’ve got to sort out a business plan.I’ll need to raise some capitalI’am pretty sure I can borrow some of the money from my family, and I’ll probably need to take out a loan as well. It’s what I’ve always wanted to do, and I think I can make it happen.“she dare to tell.

Next, Ms J also tell you about how does she spend her free time. She loves exercise – as she said “I’ve always loved exercise.” She thought to do a 10km run – that was her target. If you are listening to the same recording, I expect you’ll probably hear her saying “A real achievement would be to do the 10km run in 6 months – that’s my target. I’ll definitely do the training if I put my name down for it. My friend runs an orphanage, so I’d like to raise sponsorship money for it by doing the run.”

Also, Ms J believes that a couple of hours a week (to help out with the children) can make big difference to their lives and a couple of her friends are also interested, so they’d meet up but they’d doing something useful somehow.

Ms J would be getting married. It’s obviously that’s the big thing in her life. “I don’t know when is the best time to have children – I think I should do it soon.” Rightly, her father passed away while her mother was alone and still young, so she supposed her mother could help her out. I don’t want to go and live anywhere else, because don’t want to leave mum but I want to get on with my career. so I expect I’ll move in with her. I think it’ll be the best for all of us”

NOTE: HELP OUT / HELP (SBY) OUT / HELP OUT WITH –  do a part of someone’s work or give someone money

For the city and country, she‘d like to see improvements in education for young children. “At the moment, children go to school when they are six, but I hope the government will open more governmental nurseries and kindergartens for the younger ones. I think it will make a big difference to their chances in life. It will also help the parents a lot, since it can be hard to arrange childcare when they are working. She said.

Having to say that, I am not sure the exactly meaning of certain usage in the original tape and that’s why I told you that I needed to check the grammar book. I would like to ask you to tell me how to use “would” after your lesson, please!  By the way, let us achieve our target – do a 10 km run in the near future – it’ll be a real achievement to help out with children
