Lesson 22 – Presenting the facts

Summary
The topic of the lesson was crime. I could:
- role play giving a factual account of a crime you witnessed
- focus on crime-related vocabulary
- review past tenses used to describe past events
- practise the weak and strong form of ‘was’ and ‘were’ to sound more natural.
[Vocabulary related to crime]
Types of crime
- Robbery – the crime of stealing from somewhere or someone
- Mugging – an act of attacking someone and stealing their money
- Theft – (the act of) dishonestly taking something that belongs to someone else and keeping it
- Shoplifting – steal from shops
- Hit and run – the driver who caused the accident drives away without helping the other people involved and without telling the police
- Smuggling – the crime of taking goods or people into or out of a country illegally
- Drug dealing – buy and sell drug
- Fraud – trick and deceive people
- Bribery – giving someone money or something else of value, often illegally, to persuade that person to do something you want
- Vandalism – intentionally damages property belonging to other people

To give a factual account of a crime you witnessed:
- I was walking and I saw the whole thing happen…
- I’d like to report a theft.
- I was walking down the street and someone snatched (= TAKE QUICKLY 搶) my phone right out of my hand!

e.g The cyclist just came out of nowhere and I didn’t have time to stop!
