This, in turn, is equal to the highest value of the stall speed (V<sub>S0<\/sub>) multiplied by 1.3 or stall speed at 1G (V<sub>s1g<\/sub>) multiplied by 1.23 of an aircraft in a normal landing configuration at its maximum certified landing mass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ICAO (the International Civil Aviation Organization) and the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) approach (pun absolutely intended) these categories slightly different, but the speed ranges used by both authorities to differentiate between them are in fact the same.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Category A<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>V<sub>AT<\/sub>&nbsp;speed: less than 91 knots.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This category includes C172, PA28, DA40, and similar GA aircraft.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Category B<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>V<sub>AT<\/sub>&nbsp;speed: 91 knots to less than 121 knots.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Common among regional aircraft and mid-size turboprops such as the ATR 72-500.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Category C<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>V<sub>AT<\/sub>&nbsp;speed: 121 knots to less than 141 knots.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Often used by <strong>smaller commercial airliners<\/strong>, such as the Embraer 170\/190 family and most (but not all) B737s.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Category D<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>V<sub>AT<\/sub>&nbsp;speed: 141 knots to less than 166 knots.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This category is used by <strong>larger commercial aircraft<\/strong>, such as several B777s.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Note, the subcategory D<sub>L<\/sub>&nbsp;applies to aircraft with a wingspan of 80 meters (versus 65 meters for the \u201cregular\u201d category D.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There is also a fifth category, aptly named (you guessed it) Category E.
