The genus can be determined by making a choice from among the genera normally encountered in the level corresponding to its height.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Distinguish clouds <strong>by Genera<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Consideration of the most typical forms of clouds leads to the recognition of<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> <strong>(10) ten genera<\/strong><\/span>. The definitions of the genera given below do not cover all possible aspects, but are limited to a description of the main types and of the essential characteristics necessary to distinguish a given genus from genera having a somewhat <strong>similar appearance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">High level: Ci, Cs, Cc<br \/>\nMedium level: As, Ac, Ns<br \/>\nLow level : Sc, St, Cu, Cb<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"photo_block\">\n<ol>\n<li><a title=\"Cirrus\" href=\"https:\/\/cloudatlas.wmo.int\/en\/clouds-genera-cirrus.html\">Cirrus (Ci)<\/a> &#8211; High level\n<ul>\n<li>Detached clouds in the form of white, delicate filaments or white or mostly white patches or <strong>narrow bands<\/strong>. These clouds have a fibrous <strong>(hair-like) appearance<\/strong>, or a silky sheen, or both<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0(related to) in advance of an occluded front<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Cirrocumulus\" href=\"https:\/\/cloudatlas.wmo.int\/en\/clouds-genera-cirrocumulus.html\">Cirrocumulus (Cc)<\/a> &#8211; High level\n<ul>\n<li>Thin, <strong>white<\/strong> patch, <strong>sheet or layer of cloud<\/strong> without shading, <strong>composed of<\/strong> very small elements in the form of <strong>grains<\/strong>, ripples, etc., merged or separate, and <strong>more or less regularly<\/strong> arranged; most of the elements have an apparent width of less than 1\u00b0.<\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Cirrostratus\" href=\"https:\/\/cloudatlas.wmo.int\/en\/clouds-genera-cirrostratus.html\">Cirrostratus (Cs)<\/a> &#8211; High level\n<ul>\n<li>Transparent, whitish cloud veil of fibrous (hair-like) or smooth appearance, <strong>totally or partly covering<\/strong> the sky, and <strong>generally producing halo phenomena<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Altocumulus\" href=\"https:\/\/cloudatlas.wmo.int\/en\/clouds-genera-altocumulus.html\">Altocumulus (Ac)<\/a> &#8211; Medium level\n<ul>\n<li>White or grey, or both white and grey, <strong>patch<\/strong>, sheet or layer <strong>of cloud<\/strong>, generally with shading, composed of laminae (<strong>a layer or layers<\/strong>), <strong>rounded masses<\/strong>, rolls, etc., which are sometimes partly fibrous or diffuse and which may or may not be merged; most of the regularly arranged small elements usually have an apparent width of between 1\u00b0 and 5\u00b0.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Altostratus\" href=\"https:\/\/cloudatlas.wmo.int\/en\/clouds-genera-altostratus.html\">Altostratus (As)<\/a> &#8211; Medium level\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Greyish<\/strong> or bluish cloud sheet or layer of striated (grooves or channels in cloud formations, arranged parallel to the flow of the air), fibrous or uniform appearance,<strong> totally or partly covering the sky<\/strong>, and having parts <strong>thin enough to reveal the Sun<\/strong> at least vaguely, as through ground glass or frosted glass<br \/>\n(a grey featureless layer of clouds with great horizontal extent covering almost the whole sky)<\/li>\n<li>Altostratus does <strong>not show halo phenomena<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Nimbostratus\" href=\"https:\/\/cloudatlas.wmo.int\/en\/clouds-genera-nimbostratus.html\">Nimbostratus (Ns)<\/a> &#8211; Medium level\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Grey cloud layer, often dark<\/strong>, the appearance of which is made diffuse by <strong>more or less continuously falling rain or snow<\/strong>, which in most cases reaches the ground. It is thick enough throughout to blot out the Sun (i.e the <strong>cloud is thick enough throughout to obscure the Sun<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<li>Low, ragged clouds frequently occur below the layer, with which they may or may not merge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Stratocumulus\" href=\"https:\/\/cloudatlas.wmo.int\/en\/clouds-genera-stratocumulus.html\">Stratocumulus (Sc)<\/a> &#8211; Low level\n<ul>\n<li>Grey or whitish, or both grey and whitish, patch, sheet or<strong> layer of cloud<\/strong> that <strong>almost always has dark parts<\/strong>, composed of tessellations, <strong>rounded masses<\/strong>, rolls, etc., which are non-fibrous (except for virga) and which may or may not be merged; most of the regularly arranged small elements have an apparent width of more than 5\u00b0.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Stratus\" href=\"https:\/\/cloudatlas.wmo.int\/en\/clouds-genera-stratus.html\">Stratus (St)<\/a> &#8211; Low level\n<ul>\n<li>Generally <strong>grey cloud layer<\/strong> with a<strong> fairly uniform base<\/strong>, which may <strong>give drizzle<\/strong>,<strong> snow<\/strong> or <strong>snow grains<\/strong>. When the Sun is visible through the cloud, its outline is clearly discernible. Stratus <strong>does not produce halo phenomena except, possibly, at very low temperatures.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Sometimes Stratus appears in the form of ragged patches.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Cumulus\" href=\"https:\/\/cloudatlas.wmo.int\/en\/clouds-genera-cumulus.html\">Cumulus (Cu)<\/a> &#8211; Low level\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Detached clouds<\/strong>, generally dense and with<strong> sharp outlines<\/strong>, developing vertically in the form of rising mounds, domes or towers, of which the bulging <strong>upper part often<\/strong> resembles a <strong>cauliflower<\/strong>. The sunlit parts of these clouds are mostly brilliant white; their bases are relatively dark and nearly horizontal.<br \/>\n(White cloud &#8211; blue sky)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Cumulonimbus\" href=\"https:\/\/cloudatlas.wmo.int\/en\/clouds-genera-cumulonimbus.html\">Cumulonimbus (Cb)<\/a> &#8211; Low level\n<ul>\n<li>Heavy and dense cloud, with a <strong>considerable vertical extent<\/strong>, in the form of a mountain or huge towers.
