What’s gimbal?<\/span><\/p>\n

Ans: the component which can limits the planes in which the gyro can tilt.<\/p>\n

Gyro types<\/strong> depend on the number of planes of freedom of movement<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Freedom of movement is achieved by mounting the gyro in gimbal rings.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Space Gyro (no gimbal)
    \nFreedom of movement in all 3 planes (Fore\/aft-athwarthships and vertical). This type of gyro is of no use in aviation. We need a gyro that is fixed in at least one plane to give a reference datum.<\/li>\n
  2. Rate Gyro (T & S)
    \nA gyro having freedom of movement in 1 plane only.<\/li>\n
  3. Earth Gyro (AH)
    \nA gyro controlled by the earth’s gravity.<\/li>\n
  4. Tied Gyro (DI)
    \nA space gyro with freedom of movement in 3 planes, but tied to a reference point.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    In conclusion, relationship between gimbals and number of plans of freedom of movement – if it is not a space gyro (no gimbal), then x gimbals for maximum x + 1 planes of freedom (but it also depends on how the gyro mounting on gimbal!)<\/span><\/p>\n

    Number of gimbal?<\/span><\/p>\n

    TC\/TI (rate gyro) : single gimbal – two plans of freedom (spin axis, yaw axis)<\/p>\n

    AH (earth gyro): two gimbals – three plans of freedom (spin axis, pitch axis and roll axis)<\/p>\n

    HI (tied gyro): two gimbals<\/strong> – three plans of freedom<\/strong> (spin axis, pitch axis and roll axis) – but tied to a reference point!<\/strong><\/p>\n
