In the lesson, I had chances to practice how to :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>report complaints<\/strong> about holidays<\/li>\n<li>learn <strong>language for reporting what someone says<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>work on <strong>language to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">show sympathy<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>practise using intonation to express sympathy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<p>To ask others if they had any bad holiday experience, we could say:<\/p>\n<p><strong>[Have you ever &#8230;]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>e.g <strong>Have you ever<\/strong> <strong>had<\/strong> a flight delayed by more than 6 hours? If so , do you know that you may have right to request an insurance claim, for more details please look at your terms and conditions of your contract.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, people may <strong>complain<\/strong> <strong>about<\/strong> the flight as well as the room where they are staying in the hotel. Or they may also <strong>grumble <\/strong>to you<strong> about<\/strong> the hotel facilities or location and even the food of the room service.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, we should show our sympathy as a good listener.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>In the lesson, our tutor guided us to practice the direct and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">reporting speech.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Example 1:<\/p>\n<p>Direct &#8211; We&#8217;ll meet you at arrivals hall.<\/p>\n<p>Reporting &#8211; <strong>They told us (that)<\/strong> they would meet us at arrivals hall.<\/p>\n<p>(p.s &#8211; sb. + told + pronoun (i.e us\/them\/him\/her)\u00a0 + (that) &#8230;)<\/p>\n<p>Reporting &#8211; <strong>They said (that) they <\/strong>would meet us at arrivals hall.<\/p>\n<p>(p.s &#8211; sb. + said + (that) + pronoun (i.e he\/she\/it\/they) + &#8230;)<\/p>\n<p>Example 2:<\/p>\n<p>Direct &#8211; <strong>We won&#8217;t<\/strong> give you any compensation.<\/p>\n<p>Reporting &#8211; <strong>They <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">refused to<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong> give<\/strong> us<\/span> any compensation.<\/p>\n<p>(p.s &#8211; sb. + refused + to + v. &#8230;)<\/p>\n<p>Example 3:<\/p>\n<p>Direct &#8211; <strong>Could you give us<\/strong> a twin bed, please? (a couple standing in front of me and the male asking)<\/p>\n<p>Reporting &#8211; <strong>He <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">asked<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> us <strong>t<\/strong><\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">o <\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">give<\/span> <\/strong>them a twin bed.<\/p>\n<p>(p.s &#8211; sb. + asked + pronoun (us\/them\/him\/her) + to + v. &#8230;)<\/p>\n<p>Example 4:<\/p>\n<p>Direct &#8211; If you ask us to tip again, I&#8217;ll report it to your manager!<\/p>\n<p>Reporting &#8211;<strong> I <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">threatened <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">the cleaner to speak <\/span>to his manager if he asked tipping again.<\/p>\n<p>Example 5:<\/p>\n<p>Direct &#8211; We&#8217;ll sort it out in the morning, so sorry for your inconvenience.<\/p>\n<p>Reporting &#8211; <strong>The manager <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">promised to<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> sort that out<\/span> in the morning and gave an earnest apology to us.<\/p>\n<p>Example 6:<\/p>\n<p>Direct &#8211; We could change it for you upon your requesting.<\/p>\n<p>Reporting &#8211; <strong>He offered us<\/strong> a change if we requested it.<\/p>\n<p>Example 7:<\/p>\n<p>Direct &#8211; Why don&#8217;t you try our latest lunch set?<\/p>\n<p>Reporting &#8211; <strong>The waiter <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">suggested we<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> try<\/span> the latest lunch set.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>As a good listener, we could start the conversation like these:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">What kind of problems did you have<\/span> then<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">, Peter?<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Have you even had &#8230;?<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If\u00a0they\u00a0don&#8217;t know where to start, they may say something like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Well, I don\u2019t know where to start \u2026<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Then we could guide them to raise the problem:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Was it\u00a0(price) or &#8230;?<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>How was it?<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Tell me about it.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As a people who want to grumble about bad experience, we could make it bit-by-bit &#8211; we should use <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">past tense<\/span> and could use <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">reporting speech<\/span>:<\/p>\n<p>Example<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>It all started before &#8230;<\/strong><\/span> We had &#8230;<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">But actually it wasn\u2019t what we wanted\/expected&#8230;<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">In the end we<\/span> had to &#8230;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">but that wasn\u2019t all.<\/span> When we&#8230;\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">We realised&#8230;<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Anyway, we<\/span> told &#8230;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Then, to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>show<\/strong> our <strong>sympathy<\/strong><\/span> to others, we could say:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>That is not a good start, is it?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Oh,<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong> you must have been really<\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">annoyed (\/disappointed\/upset\/depressed\/frustrated) .<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Aha, I understand.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Oh, <strong>how awful!<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li>Golly gosh,<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong> I&#8217;m so sorry to hear that, Peter.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li>Poor you.<\/li>\n<li>Why did it take so long?<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Why did it happen to you?<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">You should not suffer from this!<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>I see.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>It sounds quite<\/strong> stressful, Peter.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;d advise you to&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<pre>TAG:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/tommykwan.com\/blog\/?s=Managing%20situations\" target=\"_blank\">#Managing situations<\/a><\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Summary Reporting about bad holiday experiences The topic of this lesson is bad holiday experiences.
