I had time to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>take part in a group discussion about white lies<\/li>\n<li>learn<strong> phrases related to lying<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>practise <strong>using phrases<\/strong> to talk about<strong> hypothetical situations<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>focus on syllable stress and contractions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mycourse-lessondetail-desc\">\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mycourse-lessondetail-desc\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"mycourse-lessondetail-desc\">Well, I didn&#8217;t want to <strong>hurt (her) feeling<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">s<\/span><\/strong> so I told a <strong>white lie.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"mycourse-lessondetail-desc\">I did some research on that company and found out that it has some problems with its trading ethics.<\/li>\n<li class=\"mycourse-lessondetail-desc\">I like her. She&#8217;s a really <strong>straightforward<\/strong> and <strong>honest<\/strong> <em>kind of person<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li class=\"mycourse-lessondetail-desc\">Why you are always <strong>telling fibs<\/strong>? I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s your age. When you would <strong>tell the truth<\/strong> a bit more?<\/li>\n<li class=\"mycourse-lessondetail-desc\">Well, <strong>it&#8217;s a question of morals and ethics.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"mycourse-lessondetail-desc\">If you know\u00a0your\u00a0friends cheating on an examination but you let them <a href=\"http:\/\/tommykwan.com\/blog\/english-learning\/lesson-8-expressing-dissatisfaction-at-work\/\" target=\"_blank\">get away with <\/a>it, it&#8217;s a really<strong> deceitful thing<\/strong> to do &#8211; it is a <strong>deceitful behavior<\/strong> rightly!<\/li>\n<li class=\"mycourse-lessondetail-desc\">Tom is a bit of a<strong> dishonest person<\/strong>. He&#8217;s always doing dodgy business deals.<br \/>\n(dodgy behavior = risky behavior)<\/li>\n<li class=\"mycourse-lessondetail-desc\">I am trying not to blame my son in public to save his face. I want to <strong>save face<\/strong> as well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Would : various uses<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>the past form of &#8220;will&#8221;\n<ul>\n<li>will\u00a0\u2192 would<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>typical behavior in the past<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>On Sunday<strong>s<\/strong> when I <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">was<\/span> a child our family members <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">would<\/span> all <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">go<\/span> to Chinese-style restaurant.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>refer to a <em>refusal<\/em> on<em> past occasion<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>I <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">did ask<\/span> her very politely, but she <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">wouldn&#8217;t tell<\/span> me.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>polite requests<\/em> &#8211; invitation, suggestions, congratulation etc&#8230;\n<ul>\n<li>We <strong>would like to<\/strong> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">invit<\/span>e you to &#8230;<\/li>\n<li>I would like to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">suggest<\/span> that we take a vote.<\/li>\n<li>I would like to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">congratulate<\/span> your promotion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>before<\/em> verbs of <em>&#8220;say&#8221;<\/em> and<em> &#8220;think&#8221;<\/em> to make a statement sound less definite\n<ul>\n<li>I <strong>would<\/strong> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">say<\/span> we are better to catch the earlier train.<\/li>\n<li>I <strong>would<\/strong> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">think<\/span> we might stop for lunch soon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>ellipsis<\/em> &#8211; would love to , would like to\n<ul>\n<li>Do you want to go with us? ~<strong> I&#8217;d love to.<\/strong> (=\u00a0 Yes, I do.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Would you &#8230;?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>if our answer is YES:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"mycourse-lessondetail-desc\">Ya, <strong>for sure<\/strong>!<\/li>\n<li class=\"mycourse-lessondetail-desc\">Oh, <strong>definitely<\/strong> (= without any doubt).\u00a0 \u00a0[Note: Yes\/No]<\/li>\n<li class=\"mycourse-lessondetail-desc\">I <strong>totally<\/strong>\u00a0want\u00a0to.<\/li>\n<li class=\"mycourse-lessondetail-desc\">OK,\u00a0<strong>in a second.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>if our answer is NO:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No, <strong>definitely<\/strong> not.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Not a chance<\/strong>, sorry~<\/li>\n<li><strong>No way!<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Forget about it.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>You&#8217;re kidding.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>if our answer is Maybe:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>It depends<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>It&#8217;s tough to say<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>It&#8217;s possibly &#8230;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>I might &#8230;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>A: <strong>What do you think about<\/strong> (this situation then)<strong>?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>B: <strong>Oh, I don\u2019t know. You tell me.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A:\u00a0<strong>Ok then, I think I\u2019d\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0tell a white lie.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>I\u2019d probably say something like<\/strong>\u00a0&#8220;I want to have some privately time and space recently&#8221;\u00a0<strong> or<\/strong> &#8220;Something has just happened, I need to leave you for a period of time&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>B:\u00a0<strong>You\u2019re kidding. No<\/strong>\u00a0(girl)\u00a0<strong>is ever going to believe that these days.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A:\u00a0<strong>I don\u2019t know. It depends<\/strong>\u00a0(her age)<strong> , surely?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>B:<strong>Why wouldn\u2019t you just tell the truth?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A:\u00a0<strong>No way. It\u2019d be a nightmare. I can\u2019t stand\u00a0<\/strong>lady crying and I don&#8217;t want to hurt her feeling<strong>s<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>B:\u00a0<strong>Seriously, you\u2019d rather make up some story than tell the truth?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A:\u00a0<strong>If I were in that situation\u2026then sure, every time.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>B:\u00a0<strong>Isn\u2019t\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>a good time to tell her the truth<strong>? So\u00a0<\/strong>both of you will have a better future.<\/p>\n<p>A:\u00a0<strong>I suppose so. How about you? What would you say?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>B:<strong> I don\u2019t know. It\u2019s tough to say. I think you probably shouldn\u2019t<\/strong>\u00a0tell fibs\u00a0<strong>though.\u00a0<\/strong>Your behavior is deceitful!<\/p>\n<p>A:<strong>\u00a0Normally no, but in this case I might \u2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>I had an assessment in the lesson though, I enjoyed it because of the useful language that I could learn &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>To talk about a <em><strong>hypothetical<\/strong> <\/em>situation :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I would never lie&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>I might\/would probably tell fibs&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>If I were&#8230;I&#8217;d&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>If I were in that situation (scenario), I&#8217;d probably\/definitely &#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To <em><strong>compare<\/strong> <\/em>and <em><strong>ranking<\/strong><\/em> situations :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I don&#8217;t think this situation is as bad as (this\/that) one.<\/li>\n<li>This one is worse than (this\/that) one.<\/li>\n<li>We should swap this one with that one.<\/li>\n<li>This one should be higher up\/lower down.<\/li>\n<li>I (don&#8217;t) think it&#8217;s OK\/morally wrong to (do sth) in this situation.<\/li>\n<li>This one&#8217;s not that bad.<\/li>\n<li>The consequences of this are (not) serious.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Well, if you were in the lesson, I guess you&#8217;d love it, definitely!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Summary Justifying opinions in a debate The topic of this lesson is lies.
