{"id":481,"date":"2017-10-14T17:02:13","date_gmt":"2017-10-14T09:02:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tommykwan.com\/blog\/?p=481"},"modified":"2017-10-14T18:21:51","modified_gmt":"2017-10-14T10:21:51","slug":"lesson-4-what-is-the-alternative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tommykwan.com\/blog\/english-learning\/lesson-4-what-is-the-alternative\/","title":{"rendered":"Lesson 4 \u2013 What is the alternative?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Summary<\/h5>\n<p>Presenting alternatives in a discussion<\/p>\n<p class=\"mycourse-lessondetail-aim\">In that lesson, I learnt:<\/p>\n<div class=\"mycourse-lessondetail-desc\">\n<ul>\n<li>summarise and present problems<\/li>\n<li>focus on ways to discuss options and express cause and effect<\/li>\n<li>learn phrases for talking about possible outcomes<\/li>\n<li>practise pausing to sound clear when discussing problems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>If we are <strong>explaining a problem<\/strong>, we can say:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u2019ve got a real dilemma (this Sunday.)<\/li>\n<li>The problem is\u00a0 (..pause..) that I want to &#8230;. but&#8230;.<\/li>\n<li>I can see problems arising (on Sunday&#8230;)<\/li>\n<li>What if &#8230;\u00a0 \u00a0Or, more likely, I bet &#8230;<\/li>\n<li>So I don\u2019t know what to do. If\u00a0 &#8230;, &#8230;.. but if I don\u2019t &#8230;, &#8230;.<\/li>\n<li>Yeah, that\u2019s one option. But, you know, I &#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If we are the listener who want to <strong>ask for more details<\/strong>, we can say:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What\u2019s that?<\/li>\n<li>So, how\u2019s that a problem for you?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If we are the listener who want to <strong>agreeing with the speaker<\/strong>, we can say:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Oh, I see what you mean.<\/li>\n<li>Yep, that\u2019s a dilemma alright.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If we are the listener who want to <strong>offer advice<\/strong>, we can say:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Can\u2019t you just make a polite excuse? You don\u2019t have to give\u00a0(him\/her\/them)\u00a0the exact reason, do you?<\/li>\n<li>Perhaps you should just (go &#8230;. ) to avoid these complications<\/li>\n<li>You are better to stay away from that problem<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Other phrases that I have learnt from the lesson:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mycourse-lessondetail-desc\">(M)\u00a0<em>from<\/em> work has <strong>invited<\/strong>\u00a0(a few of us) <strong>out for<\/strong>\u00a0(his birthday), which is nice.<\/div>\n<div class=\"mycourse-lessondetail-desc\">\nI know (someone) from work.<\/div>\n<div class=\"mycourse-lessondetail-desc\">I know (him) from a course.<\/p>\n<p><strong>he might be upset with me<\/strong> for being evasive, you know, not giving him the whole truth.
